چکیده

We present a model of He relaxation on the surface of borosilicate glass which accurately predicts observed relaxation rates and their temperature dependence. Above room temperature He dissolves into Pyrex, where interactions with Fe3þ ions result in a relaxation time of 1 ms. Gas exchange across the glass surface of an enclosed vessel leads to T 1 1 1⁄4 A=V ð3:9 1:4Þ 10 2 cm/h at room temperature, where A=V is the surface-to-volume ratio. The activation energy for relaxation is 13:7 0:7 kJ/mol and is dominated by the activation energy of He diffusion in glass. This is the first successful confirmation of predicted He relaxation rates in glass vessels. 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Effects of density and temperature on correlations between fragility and glassy properties

A fundamental question in condensed matter science is to understand what governs the increase of relaxation time, and ultimately the glass formation, in liquids upon cooling. This phenomenon, which can be observed in chemically very different systems ranging from metals to polymers, has had practical importance for thousands of years but remains poorly understood from a fundamental point of vie...

Dynamic arrest in polymer melts: competition between packing and intramolecular barriers.

We present molecular dynamics simulations of a simple model for polymer melts with intramolecular barriers. We investigate structural relaxation as a function of the barrier strength. Dynamic correlators can be consistently analyzed within the framework of the mode coupling theory of the glass transition. Control parameters are tuned in order to induce a competition between general packing effe...

Unusual fast secondary relaxation in metallic glass

The relaxation spectrum of glassy solids has long been used to probe their dynamic structural features and the fundamental deformation mechanisms. Structurally complicated glasses, such as molecular glasses, often exhibit multiple relaxation processes. By comparison, metallic glasses have a simple atomic structure with dense atomic packing, and their relaxation spectra were commonly found to be...

On the Theory of Relaxation in the Glass Transition Region

To begin with, relaxation equations will be generally examined within the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The relaxation in the glass transition region specifically proves to be a non-linear process which resembles an accelerated or retarded autocatalytic reaction. Therefore it is physically not very useful to split the relaxation in the glass transition region into a...

Saffron Induced Relaxation in Isolated Rat Aorta via Endothelium Dependent and Independent Mechanisms

Crocus sativus L. (saffron) is a widely used food additive for its color and taste. The hypotensive effects of saffron have been shown in previous studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanism of vasodilatory effects induced by saffron on isolated rat aorta. To study the vasodilatory effects of saffron aqueous extract (0.5, 1 and 2 mg/mL), isolated rat thoracic aorta rings were co...
